We spoke with Becky Teague of Becky Teague Real Estate:
How many years have you been in business? 29
What inspired you to start this business? I grew up in Stillwater. After graduating OSU in 1983, I left to find fortune and fame…working successfully with Krafts Foods, Chatham Inc. and finally opened my own Regional Consumers Products Brokerage. Opportunity knocked, for a sell off and I seized the day. Finding my self jobless was a shock. I had worked since I was 14 and through all those years I realized I made a much better Chief than an Indian, so it was a natural segway for me to return to Stillwater and join my Mother as a Realtor with Heritage Real Estate. She was one of the first pioneering females in the industry to establish and operate a female owned and operated Brokerage.
What has been your biggest success to date? Arriving at age 64 in pristine condition!
What has been your biggest challenge? Technology is definitely my biggest challenge. Sure I have learned to hunt and peck with the best of them but I miss the one-on-one relationships that tend to fall by the wayside. If you ever work with me you will discover quickly after about 5 texts on a subject your phone is going to ring…my conversation is going to start with ‘let’s have an old fashioned chat about this’ and conclude I truly miss the face to face friendships.
What inspires you to hit the ground running each morning? I LOVE to play. I was taught, chores had to be done prior to play so everyday I am highly motivated to finish up my chores! “Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” -Kay Redfield Jamison.
What's an interesting fact about your business that most people don't know? Real estate is one of the few ‘careers’ that takes very little to start up to become successful. Higher education is not required, you don’t have to buy your inventory, no need to purchase big equipment, little start up investment and you can do it anywhere! Most people probably know this but they don’t think about it.
As a member of WorkIT Coworking Center, how does being a member help you? I have enjoyed my time utilizing a ‘co-office environment’ for several reasons…it is much more efficient then me operating my own brick and mortar office, the office is manned without me paying an employee, it provides a pool of people, products and services all the while allowing for ‘water cooler’ conversations!
When you're not working, what is your favorite thing to be doing? PLAY!
